 | Number of Jury Trials - Ask your criminal defense attorney how many jury trials he/she
has had. Were they felony cases? Did he/she win? Don't be afraid to
check. |
 | Number of Homicide Cases Handled - The stakes are rarely higher than in a murder case.
|
 | Reputation for Honesty - Sneaky criminal defense lawyers like those often portrayed on
television do not make it very far in real life. An underhanded trick may work once,
but the lawyer will forever be known as someone that cannot be trusted. The sad
consequence is that all of his/her clients will suffer. Hire a lawyer who is effective
and has a reputation for knowing and playing by the rules. |
 | Criminal Defense is one of the safest areas for lawyers to practice due to the almost
nonexistent exposure to malpractice liability. It is extremely difficult to
successfully sue a criminal defense lawyer for malpractice if he does a negligent job in
handling your case. In order to win, you would have to prove in court that
"but-for" the lawyers screw-up, you would have been proven innocent - this is
very difficult; Consequently, the same lawyer who does wills for a living - and
knows very little about criminal defense - will take a DUI case because there is little
risk to him. Ask around before you hire anyone. |
